English Admiral Edward Vernon followed his disaster at Cartagena in April by taking a large force against Santiago in Spanish Cuba. Troops under General Thomas Wentworth landed at Guantánamo Bay, where badly strained relations between army and navy broke down. When Wentworth refused to advance on Santiago, the expedition withdrew in utter failure.
