Threatened by Russian claims on Finland, Sweden unwisely declared war and General Charles Erik Lewenhaupt was routed by Russian Marshal Peter Lacy and General James Keith at Willmanstrand (modern Lappeenranta) on Lake Saimaa. Lewenhaupt was later executed after surrendering 17,000 men at Helsingfors (Helsinki). The ensuing peace gave Russia part of Finland.
