Spanish General Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar ("El Cid") seized Valencia as his personal fief in 1094 and, after defeating a Muslim counter-attack at nearby Cuarte, faced another major offensive 40 miles to the south, on the coast at Bairen. The Almoravid army of King Yusuf ibn Tashfin was again defeated, but El Cid died two years later and Valencia was reoccupied by the Muslims.
