As Afghans moved into the decaying Mughal Empire, Ahmed Shah Durrani killed Maratha Chief Dattaji Sindhia at Barari Ghat, then pursued his nephew Jankoji Sindhia, who joined with the Maratha Mulhar Rao Holkar. At Sikandarabad, southeast of Delhi, the Marathas were surprised and defeated by Afghan General Jahan Khan though they later managed to take Delhi.
