Maratha King Shivaji was returning from the sack of Jalna, northeast of Bombay, when he was attacked at Samgamner by Mughal General Ranmast Khan. The King’s rearguard held the Mughals for three days of hard fighting before Maratha commander Sidhoji Nimbalkar was eventually killed, along with about 2,000 of his men. It was Shivaji’s last battle and he died six months later.
